As a consumer educator, I’ve heard many stories of people whose finances were ruined by a partner. Credit problems from a failed relationship are a common problem. Money Without Matrimony offers very sound and comprehensive advice for couples, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I had the opportunity to interview coauthor Debra Neiman on my Internet radio show, EverydayWealth Radio: Your Consumer Advocate, about the book (if you want to listen it’s archived online at wsradio.com) and she clearly knows what she is talking about and takes a compassionate approach to what can sometimes be uncomfortable topics to discuss.

Every thing in this book can be found in the program itself.
It might help those who are uncomfortable with windows programs or clicking the mouse. It might also help those who prefer reading instructions in a book rather than on the computer screen.
I was expecting some indications on how to build a Chart of Accounts that would add something to Quicken Reports. I searched also in vain for an indication on wether the Income Statement would include “unrealized income” and many other items that could not be found.
It is clear, well written, very well illustrated but only for beginners.

Review of Emarketing Excellence, Second Edition

If you’re new to marketing, and work for a large corporation, you’ll find lots of good theory here. You’ll be able to impress your friends talking about stuff like the “7 Ps” (add people, processes, and physical evidence to the 4 you’re already familiar with) or the “5 Is” (Identification, Individualization, Interaction, Integration, and Integrity). You’ll be able to cite lots and lots of academic stuff of this nature.

The book even has reviews at the end of each chapter so you can take practice runs at winning the Marketing Edition of Trivial Pursuit when and if it becomes available.

What you won’t have is a pragmatic road map towards getting more leads and selling more stuff.

Review of The Personal Security Handbook

First off, allow me to explain my credentials to review this book.I am a security professional, and for the last two years have provided physical security for a US military installation in the Middle East.I have taught women’s self-defense classes, assisted in training of force protection officers, and always try to maintain my own training and teaching skills.

Do not buy this book unless you want statistics.It’s not a “personal security handbook” by anything but title.It would be better titled as “Statistics of Risk Management.”The book tries to cover too much and ends up covering nothing very well.My definition of personal security does not cover the “Food Pyramid” or the dangers of smoking.Both may be a risk, but do not affect your security.

The book does not contain much in the way of specifics about security management and provides no details of how to implement the few suggestions it does have.”Quit smoking,” “install good alarms,” and “don’t go to high crime areas” are typical suggestions.No mention of what good alarms are, how to quit smoking, or what defines high crime areas.

The book is a wealth of statistics, but no sources are ever directly quoted and that limits their value in my mind.Occasionally sources are indirectly quoted, such as “FBI data suggests that…” and then shortly thereafter a list that may or may not be related to the statement with the FBI data.Statistics in the book also tend to contradict each other.As an example, P. 38-9 has data from Atlanta on victims fighting back against property crime.40 non-firearm wielding victims were injured while fighting back, for about 25% injury rate among victims.3 fought back with a firearm, and none of those were injured, obviously resulting in a 0% injury rate.Yet, on the next page it informs you “having a gun doesn’t improve your chances of confronting a criminal without getting injured.”Seems like in the statistics just quoted it reduced your chances of being injured by 100%.

The editors are biased against firearms but with no real reasons quoted.The only mention is paraphrased as “unless you are an avid hunter, you are more likely to harm someone in your family than an assailant.”No source or definite statistic is given. Statistics that show you are in more danger once you bring a handgun into your home rely heavily on suicides.If you remove the people who commit suicide within two weeks of their purchase, firearms purchasers are just as safe or safer (depending on other criteria) as a non-gun owning household.Basically, if you aren’t suicidal you aren’t in increased danger from buying a firearm.

They recommend Mace-type products or stun guns instead, despite mentioning that most attackers who aren’t related to the victim are drunk or high when they attack and drunks/high-ons are more immune to the pain of Mace.I always let women in my classes Mace me if they want, just to prove it doesn’t work instantaneously and won’t stop a determined attacker.I’ve been Maced with different brands and strengths as many as five times in one night, using Sudecon wipes and 15 minutes recovery time between “attacks.”Don’t rely on condiments to protect your life, but if you do, practice with it and know it’s limitations, and most importantly have a backup plan for when it fails.

Lastly, the book recommends being passive in the face of aggression, which in the real world simply doesn’t work.It didn’t work on the flights of 9/11.It didn’t work for fast food workers who let themselves be led into a walk in freezer, bound hand and foot, and then executed.Even the authors of the book say in their car jacking section: “In worst case scenarios…violent crime against the victim as well…kidnapping, rape, assault, robbery, and murder.”Two pages later they tell you not to resist a carjacker!Not resist someone who may be about to rape, rob, or murder you?Not only is that obviously a poor idea, it’s against every human instinct and law of nature.

I don’t normally take the time to review books or recommend alternatives, however I felt this book was irresponsible and possibly dangerous to anyone who did believe the editors.I recommend Massad Ayoob’s book “The Truth About Self Protection,” despite the fact that it’s older and some of the brand names are outdated, because his advice is excellent.Ayoob is a former policeman, current self-defense instructor, contributor to defense-oriented magazines, and also works as an expert witness in self-defense court cases.He knows a lot more about personal security than “The Silver Lake Editors.”Learn from the experts.

Review of How to Start a Business in Kentucky

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can’t do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be “educated customers” ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

My favorite chapters were:

1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business’ structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don’t treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn’t. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can’t complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

Review of The Everything Weddings on a Budget Book

I really enjoyed reading this book. It had a lot of helpful and realistic tips for brides on a budget. The author even made me smile a few times with her humor. I hate reading anything that’s too stuffy, so I like the fact she provides moments of light heartedness in her writing. I do wish there had been a checklist included, but other than that this is probably one of the best books for weddings I have purchased to date!

Review of Patterns for Performance and Operability

I’ve been in IT for almost 20 years now and just about all of the books are pie in the sky theory and cut and paste methodologies that don’t work in an actual deployment.
(Why didn’t I give this book 5 stars?I would’ve like some “anatomy of a failure” type lessons learned.But I would’ve given it 4 1/2 stars if possible.)

This book eschews the theory and talks about what needs to be done to put a service into a production environment and keep it up and running.If you’re looking for some great guidelines as to what needs to be done to get a product up and running, this is the book.

As a software test professional, I make a plea to my testing colleagues to get this book.There needs to be more focus on the non-functional aspects of putting a service into an operational state and so little testing is done these days with that in mind.

For developers, it provides a good list of tips for making a system much more responsive with regards to status and reporting in a production environment.Great reminders for Devs to build a system that works in the environment to which it will be deployed.
